His Patriot Ancestor:

Pvt. James Thomas, Jr. – North Carolina 1st Regiment

Pvt. Thomas was born in Bertie County, North Carolina around 1762.  He served as a private in the
company of Capt. Thomas Donoho in the 1st North Carolina Regiment.  He spent most of his time in service (1781-82) under the command of General Nathanael Greene, fighting in skirmishes with the British and their Tory allies in South Carolina.  He was discharged from service on May 2, 1782.

On September 6, 1790, he married Mary Stanley, a girl from a neighboring plantation.  They had seven children.  The last child was born in Kentucky, where they had relocated in 1806.  Thomas acquired 200 acres in the Donaldson Creek Valley and another 400 acres on Bird’s Creek.  Originally in Christian County, the land where he settled became Trigg County in 1820.

James Thomas died on September 9, 1832, at the age of seventy, and was buried in what is now known as the James Thomas Cemetery, about one-half mile south of his original home site.
