Compatriots Receive Kentucky Society Centurion Medal

Posted in Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter, Medals and Decorations on January 4, 2016 by Colonel Trigg - Virginia Militia

Steve Mallory and Geoff Baggett received a unique honor in December from the Kentucky Society SAR.  They were the first members of the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter to receive the Kentucky Society Centurion Medal, a unique medal granted by the KYSSAR for participation in 100 SAR events.  This new medal was just recently approved in 2015.   Steve and Geoff have completed well over 100 events each in the “look-back” period to 2013.  The Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter should have many recipients of this award in the coming years.Steve Geoff

Posted in Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter, Medals and Decorations on December 16, 2015 by Colonel Trigg - Virginia Militia

Approximately twenty Col. Stephen Trigg Compatriots and their guests gathered at the Crossroads Fellowship church in Cadiz this past weekend for the chapter’s third annual Awards Dinner.  Attendees enjoyed a catered barbecue supper from Porky’s BBQ in Cadiz and a program on the Battle of Blue Licks from author and historian Eddie Price.

Following the dinner and program, Kentucky Society President Chuck Scott presented several Patriot Grave Marking Medals and Col. Stephen Trigg President Geoff Baggett recognized chapter members with medals and certificates for their service in 2015.

The highest honor of the evening went to Ron Drennan of Owensboro, who joined the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter in 2014.  He was awarded the Chapter Distinguished Service Medal, the highest decoration awarded by a local chapter.  The chapter president is authorized to present just one of these awards each year to the recipient of his choice.

Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter Remembers 9/11 By Honoring Local Heroes

Posted in 9/11 Service, Medals and Decorations on September 13, 2015 by Colonel Trigg - Virginia Militia

The Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter hosted a community-wide ceremony on the fourteenth anniversary of the attack upon America on September 11, 2001, at the Trigg County Justice Center on Friday evening.

The ceremony included words of remembrance of that day, with a tribute to the 343 firefighters, sixty police officers, and eight emergency medical personnel who perished in the line of duty on that day.

The Compatriots of the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter paid tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their community by honoring several local public servants.

The first honoree of the evening was a distinguished veteran of World War II.  In a surprise award, the chapter decorated him with its Veteran’s Appreciation Medal for his service in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Former mayor of Cadiz Lyn Bailey was scheduled to receive the Bronze Good Citizenship Medal, but had to defer due to personal illness.  He will receive his award at a later date.

Former Trigg County Sheriff Randy Clark was recognized for his police service in Trigg County with the beautiful Law Enforcement Commendation Medal.  Mr. Clark served as the sheriff of our county for twenty-five years, and has over thirty-five years of law enforcement experience.

The chapter also awarded three Fire Safety Commendation Medals.  The first went to Bill Schafer, who served as Fire Chief for over twenty years in a local volunteer fire department, and continues to work in fire suppression with the Kentucky Division of Forestry.

The second recipient of the Fire Safety Commendation Medal was Ronnie Gray, who served as a local firefighter and fire chief for over forty years.  He was selected as Kentucky Fire Chief of the Year in 2004.  He is also the son of Mr. Charles Gray, the recipient of the Veteran’s APpreciation Medal.

The final honoree of the evening was Barry Gray, a 1982 graduate of Trigg County High School.  He worked as a local brick and block layer, a volunteer for Trigg County Rescue, and a firefighter. He served alongside his brother, Ronnie, as the Assistant Fire Chief at the East Golden Pond Fire Department. On August 24, 1990, while on duty and answering a fire call, Barry Gray lost his life in service to this community.  In honor of his service, the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter honored him posthumously with the Fire Safety Commendation Medal and the Medal for Heroism.  His daughter, Kayla Gray Phillips, and grandson, Reed Matthew Phillips, received the medals in his honor.

Follow the presentations and a moment of silence, chapter vice-president Steve Mallory gave five tolls of an old fire engine bell in honor of our firefighters, police officers, emergency medical personnel, elected officials, and community volunteers.

Ron Drennan Earns Patriot Grave Marking Medal!

Posted in Grave Marking, Medals and Decorations on August 21, 2015 by Colonel Trigg - Virginia Militia

Drennan Grave Medal.001-001

Compatriot Ron Drennan has become the sixth member of the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter to meet the requirements of the society’s Patriot Grave Marking Medal.  Ron took part in last weekend’s commemoration of the Battle of Blue Licks, earning him credit for five markings at the site of the mass grave of the seventy-seven Kentucky militiamen who died there in 1782.  Those marked graves enabled him to achieve the necessary fifteen required for this prestigious medal.

We have received word that his application has been approved, along with that of Ken Oakley.  They will receive their medals at a public event this fall.

Congratulations, Ron!  And thank you for your service to honor our resting Patriots.

We just discovered (after a tip from a Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter “fan”) that The Times Leader in Princeton, Kentucky, ran a story about the honors garnered by our chapter at the recent 2015 NSSAR Congress in Louisville.  We managed to secure a digital copy of the story to share with our readers.  Enjoy! Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter Recognized Nationally!

Posted in Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter, Medals and Decorations, NSSAR National Congress 2015 on June 30, 2015 by Colonel Trigg - Virginia Militia

The Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter had an amazing evening last night at the 125th annual NSSAR Congress in Louisville.  The chapter was recognized nationally for its accomplishments in 2014.  The chapter received three prestigious awards:

  • The USS Stark Memorial Award – To the Chapter with the best record for service to veterans in the past year.  Only two awards are given nationally.  The Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter received this award for chapters with less than 80 members.  Our Compatriots from the Gov. Isaac Shelby Chapter in Shelbyville, Kentucky, received the award for chapters with over 80 members.  We received a certificate and flag streamer.
  • The Liberty Bell Americanism Award – To the Chapter that presents evidence best implementing SAR resolutions and principles.  Four awards are given nationally: one for chapters with 10-49 members, one for chapters with 50-99 members, one for chapters with 100-199 members, and one for chapters with greater than 200 members.  The Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter received the award for the 10-49 member class, and led the nation in Americanism service points with 20, 349, receiving a chapter certificate and flag streamer.
  • The President General’s Cup – To the chapter based upon size that presents evidence of the most complete program of activities.  Only two of these coveted awards are given in the entire nation, one for chapters with less than 80 members and one for chapters with over 80 members.  The Col. Stephen Trigg chapter received the award for chapters under 80 members, receiving the president’s certificate.
  • The Patriot Ancestor Biographies Streamer – Awarded to a chapter for submitting biographies of the Patriot ancestors of at least 80% of its members to be included in the NSSAR Patriot Graves Index.  The Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter submitted biographies for 100% of its current members.  The award a streamer for the chapter flag.

Another Grave Marking Milestone!

Ken Oakley Grave Medal.001-001

The Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter is pleased to announce that Ken Oakley, Past President of the chapter, has completed the requirements for the SAR’s “Patriot Grave Marking Medal.” He is the fifth chapter Compatriot to reach eligibility for this medal. In order to qualify, a Compatriot of the SAR must participate in a tangible way in the marking of fifteen Revolutionary War Patriot graves. Ken’s first fifteen graves marked include earning credit for five Patriot graves through his participation in the Blue Licks Commemoration last August.  Over sixty men died in that battle and were interred in a mass grave on the site.  Yearly participation earns credit for five graves toward each medal earned.

Ken’s Patriot Grave Marking Medal Application has been approved by Kentucky Society President Chuck Scott and forwarded on to the National Patriot Grave Marking Committee. He will receive his medal in a special ceremony later this year.
