Compatriots of the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter held their annual George Washington’s Birthday commemoration today.  They presented Pam Metts, Director of the John L. Street Library in Cadiz, with yet another title for its “George Washington Library.”  This year, the chapter purchased a copy of Brian Kilmeade’s, George Washington’s Secret Six (Young Readers Adaptation).

In addition to the annual book presentation, the chapter also enjoys a “display partnership” with the library.  Mrs. Metts allows the SAR to place a George Washington display near the library’s front entrance throughout the entire week of George Washington’s Birthday.

Honoring George Washington

The Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter of the Kentucky Society Sons of the American Revolution held a brief but meaningful event on Wednesday, February 22, to mark the 285th anniversary of President George Washington’s Birthday.  Compatriots from the Cadiz chapter gathered at the John L. Street Library to present a book about George Washington to Library Director Pam Metts.  The book that the chapter gifted to the library was Jim Murphy’s, The Crossing, which tells the amazing story of Washington’s Army crossing the Delaware River for its attack on the Hessian mercenaries in Princeton, New Jersey, on Christmas Day in 1776.

This is the second year that Mrs. Metts has generously allowed the chapter to place a “George Washington’s Birthday” display at the library during the month of February.  It is also the second year that the chapter has donated a volume to the library, thus establishing an ongoing partnership for historical education.

George Washington’s Birthday Display at John L. Street Library

The Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter has partnered with Pam Metts at the John L. Street Library to place a special display in honor of George Washington’s Birthday.  It is an excellent opportunity to partially “correct the record” on the real name of the holiday.  In case you didn’t know … according to the Federal record … the third Monday of February is officially known as “George Washington’s Birthday.”  NOT the popularly celebrated “President’s Day.”  The name has never been changed by Congress.

So join us this year in celebrating the true holiday honoring our first Commanding General and Commander in Chief!

Today five Compatriots visited the Trigg County Intermediate School to present a framed canvas portrait of George Washington to school Principal Brian Futrell.  This portrait, made available by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, was purchased by the chapter specifically for placement in this school.  Mr. Futrell plans to hang it in the main hallway of the school near the offices.

In addition to the portrait, compatriots also presented Mr. Futrell with a teaching resource kit, a flag flown over Mount Vernon, and a Certificate of Appreciation for his willingness to work with the chapter in resourcing education about the Revolutionary War.

Today we received, for approval, the proof for our monument stone for the George Washington’s Birthday event.  The stone will be a 10×10 inch granite marker, four inches thick.  We will be making an announcement in local media next week about the event on Monday, February 17.  We are currently in discussions with local officials to find an appropriate location, and should have an announcement within a few days.

Meanwhile, here is is the proof.  Imagine it it shiny, dark gray granite with black lettering.

SAR Cherry TreeThe placement of this permanent monument also qualifies our chapter for a presidential streamer for our chapter flag, since this is one of the President General’s Initiatives for 2014.  The George Washington Portrait qualifies us for yet another streamer!

The cost of this granite monument is only $100.  If you would like to contribute to this expense, simply make your check payable to “Col. Stephen Trigg SAR.”

Principal Brian Futrell of the Trigg County Intermediate School has forwarded a letter to our chapter that must accompany our check for $250 to the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association.  This is the “official” request that must come from the school in order for the MVLA to send a portrait for placement.
