Chapter Poster Contest at Heritage Christian Academy

Posted in Americanism Poster Contest, Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter on December 4, 2014 by Colonel Trigg - Virginia Militia

Three students in 4th Grade teacher Tammy Hayes’ history classes recently won the title of “Class Poster Winner” in the Americanism Poster Contest sponsored by the Sons of the American Revolution. Mrs. Hayes has partnered with the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter in Cadiz for the past two school years and included the national contest as a part of her history curriculum. The theme for this year’s contest is, “George Rogers Clark.”

Class winners were: Elle Heltsley (Ms. Hayes’ homeroom), Ryan Riggs and Emma Harris (tied – Mrs. Riggs’ homeroom). Each received a winner’s certificate and a book about George Rogers Clark.  Posters were judged “blind” by the school’s teachers and administrators, who had no knowledge of the identity of the student who created each poster.  Chapter compatriots will choose one of these three winners to enter into the state level of competition.

In addition to presenting certificates to each student contest participant, the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter recognized Ms. Hayes for her dedicated efforts to teach American History to the children of the community by awarding her the “Bronze Good Citizenship Medal.” Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter President Geoff Baggett and Vice-President Steve Mallory presented the medal after their “Revolutionary War in a Trunk” educational presentation.

Living History in Mrs. Carneyhan’s Class

Posted in Americanism Poster Contest, Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter, Speakers Bureau on February 28, 2014 by Colonel Trigg - Virginia Militia

Compatriot Geoff Baggett had a GREAT visit with the kids of Mrs. Amy Carneyhan’s fifth grade class at Trigg County Intermediate School.  He brought a brief presentation about the Revolutionary War time period, including an emphasis upon Militia and citizen-soldiers.  The students had many questions, including inquiries about his uniform and equipment.

Compatriot Baggett also learned that the 5th grade teachers will be leading their students to take part in the poster contest as an extra credit assignment!  More information on their participation will be forthcoming.

Col. Trigg Chapter Goes on the Road!

Posted in Americanism Poster Contest, Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter, Speakers Bureau on February 22, 2014 by Colonel Trigg - Virginia Militia

On Friday, February 21, chapter president Geoff Baggett went “on the road” for a speaker’s bureau engagement in Lakeland, Tennessee (near Memphis).  His sister-in-law, Christy Harrison, is a fourth-grade teacher at Lakeland Elementary School.  She introduced the Americanism Poster Contest to the other teachers at her school.  In February they offered the poster project as an “extra credit” grade while studying their social studies unit on the Revolutionary War.  37 of their 140 students participated.

On Friday Compatriot Baggett spoke to a combined assembly of six classes in the school cafeteria about the militia in the Revolution and the role of Francis Marion in the Southern Theater.  He also awarded certificates to the first, second, and third place winners.  The grand prize winner also received a book, The Swamp Fos of the Revolution by Stewart H. Holbrook, and a $20 cash prize.  He also presented “Certificates of Appreciation” to the school principal and all six of the teachers who participated in the poster project.  The highlight of the afternoon was teaching the kids the, “Huzzah!” cheer and hearing the entire cafeteria full of kids giving the cheer as they waved their arms.

After the large assembly he reported to Mrs. Harrison’s class where he did a presentation on the elements of his militia uniform and the purpose of each piece of equipment.  The children enjoyed trying on his cocked hat and posing for pictures.

Unfortunately, the posters for the Francis Marion theme were judged at the statewide level in January, so none of these posters could be entered for state competition.  We are confident that the winning poster at Lakeland Elementary, one of the most creative presentations we have ever seen, would have been a “contender.”
