Memorial Day in North Carolina!

Posted in Uncategorized on May 31, 2016 by Colonel Trigg - Virginia Militia

Rick Sheets, our North Carolina-based compatriot was busy on Saturday, May 28th, 2016 in Durham, NC. He represented our chapter at Bennett Place’s Memorial Day Remembrance: The American Soldier Through the Ages, which was a military timeline of re-enactors wearing the uniforms and bearing arms from every USA war in history.
Rick displayed and interpreted period flintlock arms and powder horns to several hundred visitors on a glorious Saturday.

Later in the day, Rick presented a wreath in memory of Col. Stephen Trigg and in honor of our chapter.

Most importantly, a living hero Staff Sergeant Albertie Wall Jr. (retired US Air Force) was given a Veteran’s Appreciation Medal by our chapter. He was an air policeman attached to the 81st Air Tactical Fighter Wing at the end of World War II.

Andy (Ryan) Reed, his grandson, said a few words about his grandfather and noted his military service. Several re-enactors (many veterans themselves) gave him a rousing “three cheers” at the end of the informal ceremony. There was a mixture of tears and revelry from family and friends.

It cannot be emphasized enough that we need to reach out to our aging WW2 veterans now. GOD BLESS the Greatest Generation!

On Saturday, May 29, Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter Compatriot Ron Drennan presented the chapter’s Veteran’s Appreciation Medal to Ed Logsdon’s of Owensboro, Kentucky.  He made the presentation at Ed’s 90th birthday party. Mr. Logsdon is a United States Navy veteran of World WarII.  During the presentation he recounted a few war stories, including how his ship frequently rescued pilots that were shot down over the Pacific. One of those was former President George H.W. Bush!

Bob Sholly, Steve Mallory, and Eddie Price represented the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter by presenting our chapter wreath at the memorial.

After the ceremony was complete Bob and Kat Sholly and Steve and Debbie Mallory enjoyed the rest of the day touring all of the tents, booths, and sites of the immense rendezvous.

Geoff Baggett and Eddie Price stayed for the entire two days of the event.  As historical fiction authors, each had the opportunity to “set up shop” and sell their books to Rendezvous attendees.  Both of them did quite well and sold several books.

Our long distance compatriot Rick Sheets interpreted historic horn work and Revolutionary War era flintlock arms at Alamance Battleground Historic Site in Burlington, NC. The Battle of Alamance 245th Anniversary Reenactment was held May 14-15, 2016. Rick says that he is always energized by the inquisitive nature and good questions by the kids who come by when he is helping at living history events.
