Monday, February 22, marked the 284th Birthday of George Washington, the Commanding General of the Continental Army and the first President and Commander-in-Chief in the United States.  In honor of his birthday Compatriots of the Colonel Stephen Trigg Chapter SAR gathered at the John L. Street to make a very special presentation.  The men presented Library Director Pam Metts with the highly praised volume, Washington at Valley Forge by Russell Freedman.  This book will make an exceptional addition to the young adult historical section of the library.
Following the book presentation the Compatriots took down the George Washington’s Birthday display that has been in place at the library for the past week.

Tomahawk Winner!

Posted in Uncategorized on February 19, 2016 by Colonel Trigg - Virginia Militia

Early last year Col. Stephen Trigg Member Steve Mallory crafted a beautiful English pattern tomahawk with a curly maple handle.  He also made a gorgeous display board with antler stands.  The chapter sold $1 raffle tickets for several months to raise money to purchase a travel trailer for all of the chapter’s event property and supplies.

Well, we reached our goal right at the end of the year, so Steve reached into the ticket box and drew the big winner at this week’s monthly chapter meeting.

The Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter is proud to announce that the winner of our 2015-16 “Tomahawk Fundraiser” is Compatriot Jim Wallace of the Long Knives Chapter in southern Illinois!

Jim bought his winning ticket at Ft. Massac, Illinois, last fall when Geoff Baggett, Steve Mallory, and Eddie Price manned a booth at the annual Rendezvous at that historic site.  He received Steve Mallory’s work of art in the mail today and promptly sent us this picture.

Congrats, Jim, and enjoy your prize!

George Washington’s Birthday Display at John L. Street Library

The Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter has partnered with Pam Metts at the John L. Street Library to place a special display in honor of George Washington’s Birthday.  It is an excellent opportunity to partially “correct the record” on the real name of the holiday.  In case you didn’t know … according to the Federal record … the third Monday of February is officially known as “George Washington’s Birthday.”  NOT the popularly celebrated “President’s Day.”  The name has never been changed by Congress.

So join us this year in celebrating the true holiday honoring our first Commanding General and Commander in Chief!

Three Compatriots of the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter made yet another school visit this morning in Hopkinsville.  Geoff Baggett and Steve Mallory made the trip over from Cadiz.  Eddie Price drove all the way down from Hawesville … almost two hours away!  The team presented the Revolutionary War in a Trunk presentation to three separate groups in grades 3, 4, and 5.  The students were awesome and so responsive and full of questions!

The Compatriots also too the opportunity to honor their partnering teacher, Tracey Williams, with the Teacher’s Award for Patriotism.  This is a unique award given by the chapter to teachers who partner to bring a living history experience to their school and classrooms.

The Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter Speaker’s Bureau is one of the most active in the region.  Compatriots have spoken to forty-three classes since December 1.  They reached over 1,000 students with a hands-on Revolutionary War experience in 2015.

George Washington’s Birthday Commemoration Set for Monday, February 22

Posted in Uncategorized on February 10, 2016 by Colonel Trigg - Virginia Militia

The Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter is partnering with the John L. Street Library in Cadiz this month to educate the community regarding George Washington’s Birthday.

Tomorrow afternoon we will install a public display at the library featuring a portrait of George Washington, his headquarters flag, the Grand Union flag of the American revolution, and information correcting the record regarding the so-called “President’s Day.”  The display will remain available to the public through Monday, February 22, the actual birthday of George Washington.  On that day at 2:00 PM compatriots of the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter will arrive in uniform to retire the display and present a book to Pam Metts, Library Director, entitled Washington at Valley Forge by Russell Freedman.

The public is, of course, invited to attend the brief ceremony.  Both the chapter and the library hope that this can become an annual tradition in honor of George Washington’s Birthday.
