Posted in Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter, Grave Marking on November 15, 2015 by Colonel Trigg - Virginia Militia

Congratulations to Col. Stephen Trigg Compatriot Glenn Greenfield!  He completed his fourteenth and fifteenth Grave Marking ceremonies on Saturday, November 14.  His application for the medal has been submitted to the state society president and forwarded to the Grave marking Committee.

The Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter set a a goal for 2015 to have at least five Compatriots complete the requirements for this medal.  Glenn was the fifth of the year and enabled us to achieve that worthy goal.

Revolutionary War Patriots & Friends Honored Today

Program Flowers

The Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter, joined by Compatriots from Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee, marked the grave of two very special Revolutionary War Patriots in rural Caldwell County, Kentucky, on Saturday, November 14.

Sgt. William Blackburn of the Virginia 5th Regiment and later the army under Gen. George Rogers Clark, and Pvt. William Asherst of the Virginia Militia, were best friends in life and buried near one another in death.  They settled the same area of Caldwell County, a community known as Farmersville, and their lives were intertwined over decades.  Some of their children married one another.

The ceremony was attended by a large uniformed Color Guard of 24 Compatriots, and approximately fifty descendants and interested local residents.  Many of the descendants were “double descended” from both Patriots.  Ten different SAR and DAR chapters presented wreaths as part of the floral tribute, and six riflemen/musketeers fired in the gun salute.

This event marked the final Grave Marking Ceremony for the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter in 2015.

Veterans Day 2015 in Cadiz!

Posted in Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter, Veterans Day on November 11, 2015 by Colonel Trigg - Virginia Militia

The Col. Stephen Trig Chapter joined the other citizens of Cadiz and Trigg County on Veterans Day in two public events to honor our area veterans.

The first event of the day was the annual Trigg County Veterans Day Parade.  Ten chapter compatriots took part in uniform.  Some marched with flags and the chapter banner, several rode in Steve Mallory’s 1968 Cutlass Convertible, and Ken Oakley provided the special service of driving his convertible for the winner of the James Thomas Chapter DAR’s poster contest winner.  The chapter also welcomed Judge Jim Adams, President of the John Manire Chapter in Hopkinsville, who proudly carried the SAR Flag.

Following a brief rest at the end of the parade, County Judge Executive Hollis Alexander led the community in a beautiful ceremony honoring Trigg County’s veterans.  During that ceremony chapter president Geoff Baggett presented the SAR War Service Medal to “long distance” Compatriot Glenn Allen Thomas of Alabama.  Glenn, a descendant of Trigg County Patriot James Thomas, journeyed to Cadiz this week to participate in the Veterans Day events.  He is a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Beds for Vets!

Posted in Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter, Veterans, Veterans Projects, Veterans Support on November 3, 2015 by Colonel Trigg - Virginia Militia

We have discovered a very important need among the veterans who complete the structured program at a nearby Veteran’s Center and prepare to move out into their own apartments.  Many of them do not have a bed to sleep on!  This essential piece of furniture can be an overwhelming expense for men who are just getting back out on their own.

So some of the men of the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter have taken action to help meet this need!  We obtained a simple construction plan and materials list for a single bed.  Such a bed can suffice for someone until they save the funds to buy the bed of their choice.  We built two beds earlier in the year and delivered them to veterans in need.

This week Compatriot Glenn Greenfield, owner of a local construction company in Cadiz, managed to secure a lumber donation from a supplier in Hopkinsville to provide enough materials to build two more beds.  Today, chapter vice-president Steve Mallory cut, sanded, and assembled two more beds!

BEds for Vets

Chapter president Geoff Baggett will deliver the beds to the veteran’s center on Thursday.

Once again … the men of the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter are doing “whatever it takes” to honor and assist our military veterans!
