New Medal Commissioned!

Posted in Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter, Medals and Decorations on August 21, 2014 by Colonel Trigg - Virginia Militia

The Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter is well-known and well-regarded for its recognition of veterans in our community.  Over this past year we have recognized twenty-five veterans with Certificates and copper medallions.  But the men of the chapter have desired a more compelling and more tangible way to recognize those who have served our nation in the military.

The Compatriots of our chapter voted at the August regular meeting to commission a new military-style medal, designed and produced exclusively for our chapter, to replace the previously-used copper medallions.  Artists at the Pin Center, the supplier of medals and memorabilia for the SAR, have designed a very colorful, patriotic medal for our use.  We have placed an order for fifty, and expect delivery within a month to six weeks.

Here is the artist’s rendering of our new medal:

Recipients for this medal must be recommended by a Compatriot of the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter.  Please fill out the Veteran’s Appreciation Medal Request Form and submit the form, along with your $10 medal fee, at the next chapter meeting.  Compatriots should included as much information as possible about the veteran’s service, as well as noting any wartime service.  When presenting, Compatriots should also make it a priority to get a photograph of the presentation or the recipient so that we may post the photo and information on our website and in our monthly newsletter.

Two Medals Awarded Today

Compatriots of the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter decorated two men from the Trigg County community with much-deserved medals today.

The first award was to Jeff Broadbent, Director of the Pennyroyal Veteran’s Center in Hopkinsville.  Jeff is a resident of Cerulean and a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Army and the Army National Guard.  His work with homeless veterans has had a tremendous impact upon our region.  The Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter decorated him with the Bronze Good Citizenship Medal.  Compatriots also encouraged him to make application for membership, since he is a direct descendant of local Patriot Absalom Humphries.

The second award was the Medal for Heroism.  The recipient was Mac Barnes, a 23-year veteran if the infantry in the U.S. Army, now resides in Cadiz and works a t a local factory.  Earlier this year he was present when an industrial accident occurred and a young man received a traumatic, life-threatening injury.  Mr. Barnes took charge of the situation, removed the man from danger, triaged and stabilized him, and maintained care until the medical evacuation helicopter arrived.  Without his rapid response, leadership, and training in battlefield first aid, the young man might have perished or been disabled for life.  Instead, he was evacuated successfully, received emergency surgical care, and survived the event.  He has even returned to work at the plant.

Mr. Barnes is very interested in becoming a SAR member, but his lineage prior to the Civil War has served as a major roadblock.  The investigation continues …

August Visit to Pennyroyal Veteran’s Center

Today marked our chapter’s monthly visit to the Pennyroyal Veteran’s Center in Hopkinsville, a residential program for military veterans.  Compatriots Geoff Baggett and Steve Mallory made the visit, representing both the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter and Crossroads Fellowship Church.  While there they honored a very special veteran, O’Daniel Buckner, who served in the United States Air Force in the Vietnam War, with a Veteran’s Appreciation Certificate and medallion.

The Crossroads/SAR duo also brought an award for Nathaniel Lewis of the United States Marine Corps, Vietnam, but he was absent due to a personal appointment.  The center director took his award to present later today.

Besides presenting awards, the visitors also brought several items for the men to use.  Many of the Compatriots in the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter attend Crossroads Fellowship Church (11 at last count), and they have led the church to start collecting items for the Veteran’s Center on a regular basis.  During the month of July the church collected toiletry items for the men.

Today Geoff Baggett, pastor of Crossroads and President of our chapter, went with Steve Mallory, a regular attender at Crossroads and chapter Vice-President, to deliver the items.  Gifts included:

  • 34 Toiletry “Welcome Kits” (containing 408 items total)
  • 17 cans of shave cream
  • 40 bars of soap
  • 3 toothbrushes
  • 10 personal deodorants
  • 6 bottles of shampoo
  • 162 disposable razors
  • One bag each of t-shirts and socks

The items totaled 656, earning the chapter that many points toward  the USS Stark Memorial Award for veteran’s support.

The biggest gift, however, came from an anonymous donor at the church.  Someone gave a cash gift of $1000 to the veteran’s center cause.  After conferring with the center administrator, Jeff Broadbent, it was decided that the best use of thee funds would be to create a special “Scholarship Fund” that will be used to meet various educational needs.  Residents often need help with college expenses, textbooks, or fees for vocational training.  This fund will be available at the discretion of the director, and will help prevent having to “dip” into other budget areas to cover these kinds of expenses.  The gift, while a generous donation from a Crossroads Fellowship member, earned the chapter 1,000 points in the Americanism contest among chapters nationwide.

Gala of Tables 2014

Posted in Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter, Color Guard with tags on August 6, 2014 by Colonel Trigg - Virginia Militia

Compatriots Dr. Dennis Adams and Geoff Baggett hosted a table at the annual Trigg County Schools’ “Gala of Tables” on Tuesday morning.  This event is a catered breakfast honoring the faculty, staff, and support personnel in our local school system.  Over fifty local churches, businesses, and clubs sponsor a table and host 4-6 school personnel.  Each table has a specific theme, and competition between tables is “furious.”

Naturally, our hosts went with a patriotic/historical theme.  This included a deep red table cloth, wooden plates and utensils, and stoneware mugs.  The centerpiece was an antique bread bowl full of “apples for the teachers.”

Our two compatriots were, easily, the most photographed participants in the event.  it was an excellent opportunity to display the spirit and activities of our chapter in front of a very large group.

Below are pictures from the event …
