Patriot Grave Marking Ceremony – July 19 @ 10:00 AM

Posted in Grave Marking, James Thomas on June 28, 2014 by Colonel Trigg - Virginia Militia

The Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter is pleased to announce that it will host a Patriot Grave Marking Ceremony at the grave of Pvt. James Thomas in the Donaldson Creek area of Trigg County.  The ceremony will be held in conjunction with the annual Thomas-Bridges Association Family Reunion.  The service will begin at 10:00 AM.

Pvt. Thomas was born in Bertie County, North Carolina around 1762.  He served as a private in the  company of Capt. Thomas Donoho in the 1st North Carolina Regiment.  He spent most of his time in service (1781-82) under the command of General Nathanael Greene, fighting in skirmishes with the British and their Tory allies in South Carolina.  He was discharged from service on May 2, 1782.

On September 6, 1790, he married Mary Stanley, a girl from a neighboring plantation.  They had seven children.  The last child was born in Kentucky, where they had relocated in 1806.  Thomas acquired 200 acres in the Donaldson Creek Valley and another 400 acres on Bird’s Creek.  Originally in Christian County, the land where he settled became Trigg County in 1820.

James Thomas died on September 9, 1832, at the age of seventy, and was buried in what is now known as the James Thomas Cemetery, about one-half mile south of his original home site.

The James Thomas Cemetery is located on the Donaldson Creek Road near the junction with the Old Dover Road.  The GPS coordinates of the cemetery are:  36.748417, -87.857652.

Directions from I-24 (Exit 65):

  1. Take Hwy 68/80 West toward Lake Barkley for approximately 5.8 miles.
  2. Turn left on Hwy. 139 (headed south) and drive for 6.3 miles.
  3. Turn right onto Donaldson Creek Road (Hwy 807).  Go approximately 3.1 miles.
  4. Turn left onto the Old Dover Road and proceed across Donaldson Creek.
  5. Once you cross the creek, proceed approx. 1/10 mile and turn right onto the new rock surface.
  6. Follow the fresh rock driveway (cornfield on your right) until you see the parking area on the left.  If you are healthy and able to walk, please part there and walk the rest of the way in toward the graveyard.  We want to save the limited parking area near the cemetery for special needs attendees.

$50 Hunting Shirt Available

Posted in Color Guard, Uniform on June 23, 2014 by Colonel Trigg - Virginia Militia

We have secured a great deal on a hunting shirt from a Compatriot in central Kentucky.  Geoff Baggett bought this beautiful shirt for a mere $50, about half of its original price.  He is making it available to one of our men who needs a uniform.  He will pick it up in either July or August, so there will not be any shipping charges. The size is “Large,” which is a comfortable fit for the average-sized guy.

Here is a picture of this awesome shirt …

This shirt, in combination with an inexpensive hat and khakis makes a GREAT starter uniform!

Whoever calls “dibbs” gets it!  Just give a shout!

The PACHEK Yearbook, that is … it’s the annual for the Pennyrile Area Christian Home Educators of Kentucky.  The organization dedicated an entire page in their yearbook to the visit of Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter President Geoff Baggett!

Pretty awesome!  A “promo” for SAR that will be seen over and over again by many students and families.
